The Details

Working Under The Equal Access to Justice Act

The vast majority of Newel Law’s work is conducted under The Equal Access to Justice Act.

This federal statute allows for an award of attorney fees to those that prevail against the SSA unless the SSA’s position is determined to be “substantially justified”.

This means that you do not pay out-of-pocket attorney fees to Newel Law if the federal court appeal is successful, and nothing if it is not.

Advocacy on Behalf of Disabled Individuals

Melissa knows from personal experience that it takes just one diagnosis, injury, or medical condition to profoundly alter a life – whether they know it or not.

Due to her own family’s experience with this reality, Melissa founded Newel Law in 2013 in order to advocate on behalf of disabled individuals.

Formerly a litigator on behalf of corporate clients for over a decade, Melissa prefers utilizing her advocacy skills where they can make an impact for those in need.

Melissa is admitted to the Eastern and Northern District Courts in California, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Supreme Court of the United States.
